If there is one thing that Americans love to talk about, it’s freedom. But, if there’s one thing that Americans don’t really understand biblically, it’s freedom. We typically think that true freedom is the ability to do whatever we want. I am free if I can choose this or I can choose that, but if one of those things that we choose is sin, then the Bible says that that’s not freedom. It’s actually slavery.
Jesus declared this in John 8:34, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.” So, true freedom is not found in the ability to choose sin. True freedom is found in the ability to refuse sin. That’s why God who cannot sin is the freest being in the universe.
That’s why the Holy Spirit in James 2:12 calls God’s moral law “the law of liberty.” If you and I choose to follow God’s laws of morality, which call us to choose what is righteous over what is sinful, we will experience what true freedom really is. His moral laws lead to liberty. The devil and those under his influence will tell you otherwise. But he’s a liar, and that’s a trap. Follow God’s moral law of liberty, and then you will be free indeed!
Change begins in you!
