If the Lord Is Willing

“Hey, are you going over there tonight? If the good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.”

That’s one of those good Southern country sayings. But it actually expresses a profound biblical truth. We can make plans all day long, but they will only come to pass if the Lord is willing.

The Holy Spirit says it this way, and James, chapter 4, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’”

Beloved, I know this is hard for us to swallow, but we are not ultimately in control. We are are subject to the plans and purposes of our sovereign God. He in his providence is overseeing the outworking of history, and he is working all things after the council of his will.

But I want to be in control! Do you, really? You and I are like the blind leading the blind. Our perspective and knowledge and wisdom and power are so finite And minuscule. Our life is so short, like a vapor. We are here today and gone tomorrow. We can’t really control anything. But God who sits in the heavens, and is holy, holy holy, and is Almighty, and all loving and all wise, he is in control and delightfully so.

So, as we make our plans, we must always keep in the forefront of our minds, if the Lord wills. And we don’t say that with our hands thrown up in the air in frustration, but rather with our hearts filled up with trust that the Lord knows what’s best and will do what is right. May we rest in his holy, sovereign will.

Change begins in you!
