I Swear

Country star John Michael Montgomery had a huge hit song years ago that said,

I swear, By the moon and stars in the sky, I’ll be there, I swear
Like the shadow that’s by your side, I’ll be there
For better or worse, ‘Til death do us part
I’ll love you with every beat of my heart, I swear

Do you remember that song? It was a beautiful love song that has been played at an untold number of weddings over the years.

That song captures something that we as human beings often do. When we really want to show that we are serious about something, that we really will keep our promise, we swear. And we tend to swear by things that are bigger than us or very precious to us. We’ll say things like “I swear to God” or “I swear on my mother’s grave” or “I swear on my child’s life” or we swear with our hand on the Bible. Have you ever said or done things like that?

Well, Jesus’s brother James has a word by inspiration of the Holy Spirit in the book of James chapter  5 that challenges that sort of thinking. He says, “But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.”

Beloved, we shouldn’t have the swear. We should have the type of character, the level of follow-through, the reputation as a truth-teller, the degree of promise-keeping that our “yes” or “no” by itself is enough. Do you have that kind of character? It’s time to build it so that your simple “yes” will be taken as yes and your plain “no” will be taken as no.

Change begins in you!
