Wednesday Is for Worship: I’m Going Free (Jailbreak)

Wednesday-Is-for-Worship

As many of you know, I’ve been a worship leader in some capacity since 1999.  I’m passionate about music, especially music that magnifies the Lord!

Today I want to reintroduce a weekly series that I’ve taken about a year-long break from, but since moving to pastor at Eastwood Baptist Church and getting to sing to the Lord under the leadership of our worship pastors Mark and Dana, I’ve felt led to pick the series back up again.  I pray it will be beneficial to you.

The series is called “Wednesday Is for Worship,” and each week I’ll post a worship song to God.  I pray you’ll use it first to sing praise to our great God and then to introduce it to others, hopefully even your congregation.  Some of the songs will be new.  Some will be old.  But, all of them will extol the name and glories of God.

Have you ever been locked up in jail?  Whether we have or not, all of us have had the shackles of sin chaining us up.  Today’s Wednesday Is for Worship song is a celebration of being released from the bondage of sin and condemnation.  It’s called “I’m Going Free (Jailbreak).”

Written by Benji CowartJacob Sooter, and Tyler Miller and published in 2012 by HBC Worship Music out of Harvest Bible Church where James MacDonald pastors, the song is a folksy praise offering to God for setting us free.  The first verse rejoices in the innocence that Christians borrow from Jesus , who is not only our provider of righteousness, but amazingly also our judge.  Just picture the righteous judge stepping down from the bench to sit in our criminal’s chair.  His goodness covers us!  Through Jesus Christ, nobody can bring a charge against God’s elect because it is God who justifies (Rom 8:33).

The second verse touches on the changed life that flows out of being freed from sin.  It’s a life that revels in the newness found in Jesus.  It’s a life that walks the narrow road, leaning on the grace of God and never turning back.

All of this truth pushes us forward into praise as the chorus celebrates having those shackles removed so that we can go free.  Glory! Glory!  Hallelujah!

So, I pray this Wednesday that if you are free in Christ, you will take the time to join in with the Vertical Church Band to praise Jesus because if the Son has set you free, you are free indeed (Jn 8:36)!

Go on and speak against my borrowed innocence
The judge is my defense, I’m going free
Right when the gavel fell, I heard the freedom bell
Ring through the heart of hell, I’m going free
I’m going free

Glory, glory, hallelujah
You threw my shackles in the sea
Glory, glory, hallelujah
Jesus is my liberty
I’m going free

I won’t go back again, that’s just not who I am
Lord, I’m a brand new man, I’m going free
I’m on a narrow road, it’s paved with grace and hope
It’s gonna lead me home, I’m going free
I’m going free

I am free, I am free indeed
I am free, I am free indeed
We are free, free indeed
We are free, free indeed

Someday I’ll fly away on Your amazing grace
Your love is my jailbreak, I’m going free
