Can you name the person whose faith helped make yours possible?

Apostle Paul opens the letter we know as 2 Timothy not with strategy, but with a name and description: “To Timothy, my beloved child.” Before there’s ministry instruction, there’s relationship. Paul thanks God for Timothy “night and day,” longing to see him, remembering his tears, filled with joy at the thought of him.

This wasn’t a mentor checking a box. This was a father in the faith, deeply invested in a son in the ministry.

We often picture faithful ministry as programs, platforms, and productivity. But Paul shows us something different: ministry that lasts is ministry that’s relational. It’s forged in shared experiences, remembered conversations, and steady concern for one another.

So, here are two very important questions:  Who’s your Paul, and who’s your Timothy? In other words, who is helping you in the faith, and who are you helping in the faith? If you can’t answer those questions, then your next step is to find people to pour into you and for you to pour into.

Every Christian is to be a minister, and faithful ministry isn’t done alone. It’s poured into people, one relationship at a time, across generations. Someone helped make your faith possible. Now go make it possible for someone else.
