That song is a blessing to me. Not only is it a sweet melody, but more importantly it points me to a sweet subject:  the Word of life. Apostle John uses that phrase in the opening of his first letter, which we call 1 John. He writes, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.”

Who is John talking about when he says “the Word of life”? Well, he’s talking about Jesus. Jesus is the Word of life, or the Word who gives life. It was John in the first chapter of his gospel who described Jesus this way, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

Jesus is the Word of life. And because he is the Word of life, he has the words of life. What he says will lead us to life. That’s why they are beautiful words and wonderful words. That’s why I love to hear them shared and sung over and over again to me.

Have you heard the words of life from the Word of life? Have you received them by turning from your sin and putting your full hope in Jesus Christ? All who have and will will not only have life, but have life abundant and everlasting. Don’t miss out on life itself!
