Every faithful follower of God wants to make the most of the opportunities God has given them to serve. They want to make a real difference, to be handed real work. We want to be useful to God.

But it’s important to understand that usefulness isn’t automatic. It’s determined by how we show up for service.

To illustrate this truth, in 2 Timothy 2, Apostle Paul pictures a great house full of vessels—some gold and silver, some wood and clay. And then he says, “If anyone cleanses himself… he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.” So, usefulness is connected to purity.

If you were hosting a party at your house, would you want to use a filthy cup to serve your guests? Absolutely not! And neither does God. As Master of the house, He desires to use clean vessels.

So, Paul commands all of us who desire to maximize our service to God to flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Avoid foolish quarrels that only breed strife. Instead, be kind, able to teach, patient with opponents, correcting gently, trusting God for repentance. And in doing so, we shall make ourselves pure and useful to God.

You see, beloved, maximum usefulness isn’t about talent. It’s about having a clean heart.

So, may we pursue purity so that we’ll be ready vessels whenever the Master calls.
