Jesus one time emphatically said, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”
Have you found that to be true? Have you ever tried to work for two bosses? Everything is fine while they don’t contradict one another, but as soon as one says one thing and the other says the opposite, you are in a pickle because you have to choose which one to follow. You can only make one happy. And the other one you’ll just have to make mad. I know a guy who once essentially had 4 bosses, and boy, was he miserable!
Well, as we turn to Romans 8, we see the outworking of what Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters.” The two masters addressed here in Romans 8 are your flesh and the Holy Spirit. Apostle Paul wrote, “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”
So, there you have it, beloved. You cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve both your flesh with all of its sinful desires and the Holy Spirit with all of His righteous desires. You have to choose one or the other. Which one will you choose, your flesh or the Holy Spirit? Which one will you please, and which one will you grieve? Choose wisely because only one master leads to everlasting life and peace.
Change begins in you!
