Cleanse Us from All Unrighteousness

Saturday Night Live has a been staple late night comedy for almost 50 years now. It’s not as funny as it used to be, but man, there have been some really funny comedians and some hilarious sketches over the years. One of my favorites was Dana Carvey, and one of his most memorable characters was the Church Lady doing her Church Chat tv show. She would make commentary on people in the news or have guests on and then commence to calling them out for the different ways they had sinned. “Well, aren’t you just a special little sinner!”

The truth of the matter is that we are indeed sinners. The Bible makes that clear. One of the places it does that is in 1 John 1 where the Holy Spirit tells us through Apostle John that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. He goes on to say that if we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar, and his word is not in us.

We are indeed sinners. How do we know? Well, God says so, but God also demonstrates our sin to us. One of the clearest ways He does that is through the 10 Commandments. One of the 10 Commandments says, do not lie. Have you ever told a lie? Then you are a sinner. Another one of the 10 Commandments says, do not steal. Have you ever taken anything that was not yours, regardless of the value? Then you are a sinner. Another one of the 10 Commandments says, do not use the Lord’s name in vain? Have you ever misused or abused God’s name? Then you are a sinner.

We could go on, but just those three should be an enough to demonstrate that you and I are sinners. Remember, it only takes one sin to be a sinner.

But here’s the amazing thing, while Apostle John says that we are sinners, he also says this in 1 John 1, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Beloved, yes, we are sinners, but we can be forgiven by confessing our sins to God and putting our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Have you done that? Sinner, forgiveness and salvation can be yours. This sinner sure is thankful for what God has done my life. He can do the same in yours!

Change begins in you!
