My great-grandfather Phillip Croslin was a sharecropper in southcentral KY and made a name for himself as an honest mule trader. If he said, yes, the mule is good, the mule was good. He was a man of his word.

Does that kind of character seem a thing of the past? It shouldn’t be. Jesus expects it in us. He told us in Matthew 5:37 to simply let our yes be yes, and our no be no. We shouldn’t have to swear an oath to be believed. There shouldn’t be a need to swear on our mother’s grave or our child’s life or own our life or to swear to God. No, our simple yes or no should be enough.

You may be thinking, Ben, that’s just not how the world operates today, but I’m not talking about the world. I’m talking about you. Is that the kind of character you have?
