One of the most important verses in all of the Bible is found in Ephesians 5:18 where Apostle Paul commands us to be filled with the Spirit. He, of course, is referring to the Holy Spirit. And when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, holy things start to happen. We begin to encourage one another with truth, we have an overflow of worship coming out of our heart, and we are filled with thanksgiving.
But being filled with the Spirit also leads to holy dynamics within marriage. Today, we’ll focus on wives, and tomorrow, Pastor JJ will focus on husbands. The Bible says here in Ephesians 5 that if a woman is filled with the Holy Spirit, she will submit to her own husband as to the Lord Jesus Christ. Just as the church as the Bride of Christ submits to Christ, so should wives submit to their own husbands.
To say the least, this teaching is out of step with today’s culture. After decades of being shaped by secular feminism, people today in America are more inclined to be taught the opposite: husbands, submit to your wives in all things. In so many homes, even Christian homes, the wife is the leader, and the husband happily or frustratingly sits by.
Wives, this may be in step with the culture, but it is not step with Scripture. And we should long to be scriptural instead of cultural. I pray that you will dig into the Scripture here as to what submitting to your husband as unto Christ means practically. And husbands, while your wife is commanded to submit to you, you should do everything in your power to be the kind of husband that makes it easy for your wife to submit to. You should work to make that a happy submission.
Beloved, be filled with the Holy Spirit so that you will live holy lives.
Change begins in you!
