Well, tax prep season is back around again. Have you filed yours yet? I’m not sure if anybody likes tax season but accountants and politicians.
Have you ever thought, “Man, my citizenship is in Heaven. I shouldn’t have to pay taxes on earth,”? Well, in Luke 20, Jesus clearly addressed that thought.
The scribes and the chief priests sent spies to try to trap Jesus. They asked a loaded question, “Teacher, is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?”
Jesus asked for a coin. “Whose image is on this?” Caesar’s, they said. “Then give Caesar what belongs to Caesar.” In other words, “Pay your earthly taxes.”
But Jesus didn’t stop there. He then said, “And give God what belongs to God.”
If it’s true that that coin belonged to Caesar because it bore his image, then it’s also true that whatever bears God’s image belongs to God. So, what bears God’s image, or more precisely, who bears God’s image? The book of Genesis says you do. You carry the imprint of their Maker. Caesar gets what bears his image, namely those coins. But God should also get what bears His image, namely you.
Beloved, yes, give that money to your government as required. But also, give your body, heart, and soul, your whole self, to God.
You were minted in heaven, stamped with glory. You belong to the One whose face you bear on your soul. Have you given yourself to Him?
Change begins in you!
