The late physicist Stephen Hawking once said, “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge.” The Greek philosopher Epictetus once wrote, “It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.”
Both of these men, whether they realized it or not, were echoing wisdom found in the Bible. Apostle Paul commands us in Romans 12:16, “Never be wise in your own sight.” And Paul is actually echoing the wisdom of King Solomon who said in Proverbs 3:7, “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.”
Being wise in your own eyes is a mindset that says you have it all figured out. Your understanding and your ways are best. In fact, your ways and your understanding are better than God’s. You don’t need anybody to instruct you. You know all you need to know. You are self-reliant and self-sufficient.
What a prideful mindset! Are you prone to think that way? Beloved, remember that Scripture teaches that “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Beloved, only a fool thinks or acts like he knows everything. A wise person well knows that they don’t know it all. Humble yourself. Seek the Lord’s wisdom. And then you’ll be wise.
Change begins in you!
