God’s Hidden Hand

Do you ever wonder why things happen the way that do? We may never fully understand why, but for those who believe the Bible, we can trust that God’s hidden hand is there weaving it all together for His good purposes. Theologically, we call this divine providence. And Genesis 42-47 unfolds one of Scripture’s most stunning displays of this biblical truth.

Joseph has ascended to second in command of all of Egypt, placed their by the Pharaoh to prepare the nation for the coming famine. The brothers who sold Joseph into slavery now stand before him, desperate for grain as famine is finally bearing down. Yet, they don’t recognize the Egyptian ruler as their brother, whom they betrayed. And what follows reveals how God works in extraordinary ways.

The pit, the false accusation, the prison—all seemingly tragic detours—were actually God’s pathway to perfectly position Joseph to preserve not just Egypt, but his own family from starvation, which is lineage of Jesus Christ. The brother’s plan was not good, but God was working good out of it. Joseph’s words in Genesis 50 capture this truth beautifully: “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive.” Twenty years of heartache had divine purpose. That’s God’s ways are absolutely astounding.

But right along that is a second astonishing thing: the reconciliation of Joseph and his brothers. Joseph could have executed his brothers or left them to starve and would have had every right to do so. Instead, he wept, forgave, and embraced them. “Do not be distressed or angry with yourselves,” he assured them in Genesis 45. His forgiveness mirrored God’s own heart.

Beloved, when you face betrayal, loss, or circumstances that make no sense, remember Joseph’s journey. God is orchestrating provision and purpose through your pain in ways you cannot yet see. The same God who turned Joseph’s slavery into salvation can transform your heartache into unexpected blessing. Trust His hidden hand, extend forgiveness as you’ve been forgiven, and watch for the provision only He can orchestrate.

Change begins in you!
