Your mouth is home to one of the most amazing muscles in the entire human body. I’m talking about your tongue. And to be more precise, it’s not just a muscle. It’s actually eight muscles. Did you know that? Your tongue is a network of 8 different muscles.
And your tongue does all sorts of amazing things. With it, you can taste and then swallow. It’s also helps you to suck a straw or a lollypop. What’s more, the tongue contains many immune system cells and even plays a major role in body language, like when you stick out your tongue at somebody.
And of course, with your tongue, you can speak. And that function is one of the things that not only makes the tongue amazing but also makes it powerful. You see, Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
Did you hear that? Your tongue has the power of life and death. That’s hard to believe, but haven’t you found that to be true? No, your words won’t physically kill somebody, but they can make them wish that they were dead or make them wish that you were dead. And for those who are discouraged and down-trodden, speaking an encouraging word to them breathes life back into them. Words, like breathing air into a person’s lungs, are life-giving.
And those who love to use their tongue wield a great responsibility. The Bible says here that those who love to use their tongue will eat its fruit. In other words, the more you use your tongue, the more you spread life or death.
So, use your tongue wisely. Perhaps use your tongue more sparingly, but certainly use it more carefully. Just like you don’t wave around a sword or a loaded gun, don’t wave around your loaded tongue. You just might kill somebody!
Change begins in you!
