When You Can’t Trust Yourself

Have you ever done the same stupid thing you said you’d never do again? Well, you’re in good company because that’s exactly what Abraham did.

After years of walking with God, witnessing miracles, and receiving promises, he fell back into the same lie that nearly cost him everything in Egypt. “She’s my sister,” he told King Abimelech as he entered into his territory, throwing Sarah into danger and jeopardizing the very promise of a son God had given. Abimlech saw her beauty, thought she was available, and took her into his harem as one of his wives.

This wasn’t a small mistake Abraham made. It was catastrophically stupid. Abraham’s deception could have destroyed God’s entire redemptive plan. Through Sarah would come Isaac, and through Isaac, the nation of Israel, and ultimately, the Messiah. One foolish decision threatened everything.

But watch what God does. He didn’t abandon His faithless servant or His endangered plan. God intervened directly, warning Abimelech in a dream to return her, threatening his life, and closing every womb in his household. He protected Sarah’s purity, preserved His promise, and even had a pagan king rebuke His prophet Abraham. How humbling is that!

Beloved, let the truth demonstrated here comfort you. God’s plans don’t depend on our perfection. Even when we act foolishly, compromise out of fear, or repeat old sins, He remains faithful, not because we deserve it, but because He’s committed to His promises and His people.

This reality should encourage struggling believers today. Yes, our sins have consequences. Yes, God calls us to wisdom and faith. But when we fail—and we will—His plan doesn’t collapse. His grace covers our stupidity. His sovereignty redeems our messes. Trust Him, even when you can’t trust yourself.

Change begins in you!
