Who are the most religious and spiritual Christian people you know? That may be a tough question to answer because you can’t just listen for the person who is the most dynamic in prayer or look for the person who speaks the most about God or watch for the person who is the most exuberant in worship.

No, the Bible says in James 1 that if you want to find the most spiritual Christian around, the person whose Christian religion is really making a difference in their life, look for the person who is caring for widows and orphans in their affliction. That’s the person who really gets the Christian life and who is really following Jesus closely.

Why is that the kind of work that best exemplifies the Christian faith? Because it’s sacrificial work, it’s outside of the spotlight work, it’s compassionate work, it’s work for those who can give nothing in return. You see, widows and orphans represent the most needy among us. And the Holy Spirit says, if you really want to be Christ-like, if you really want to be spiritual, go and do for the least of those among you in the name of Christ. That’s the person whose Christianity is pure and undefiled before God the Father.

Christianity calls us to help those who cannot help themselves, just like Jesus did for us. May you go do the same in Jesus’ name.
