Have you ever been accused of having selective hearing? I know I’ve had that label tossed onto me a time or ten. Sometimes, we just hear what we want to hear.
Do you or somebody you love have selective hearing when it comes to the gospel of Jesus Christ? Here in Romans 10, Apostle Paul has been talking about how he longs for his people, the Jewish people to realize that Jesus is their Messiah Christ and Savior, and turn from sin and trust in him. And he’s declared that everybody who will confess Jesus is Lord will be saved.
Of course, they have to hear the good news in order to receive the good news. But then he asks this rhetorical question: have they not heard?
He says, of course, they’ve heard. Well, he asks, have they not understood? Yes, they have understood. So, what’s the issue then? Well, here’s the issue. Paul says, they are just a disobedient and contrary people. They have hard heads and hard hearts. They hear what they want to hear. They have selective hearing, just like many people today.
Beloved, if that describes you or a person you love, I’m praying for a head that is open to truth, a heart that is soft and tender to the Holy Spirit’s calling, and ears that are attuned to the Good News of Jesus so that you may truly hear, understand, love, and receive what God has for us in Jesus Christ.
Change begins in you!
