But Paul doesn’t just address our heart. He also addresses our head. He doesn’t just want our love to grow. He also wants our knowledge to grow. And he wants our knowldge to grow for a very specific purpose, so that our discernment will grow.
Discernment, you see, is very important! It’s the ability to perceive, understand, and judge things clearly and wisely. It’s knowing the right thing to do at the right time, for the right reason. So, we need a big heart and a big brain.
A person who is all heart and no brains is in a precarious situation because while they may seem very kind and loving, they will lack discernment. They mean well but make poor decisions. They’re naïve, caring but easily misled. They’re overly sentimental, driven by emotion, not logic. And they’re warmhearted but foolish, acting out of empathy without thinking things through.
So, yes, we want to grow our heart, but we also want to grow our head. We must add knowledge to our love so that we can discern what is good, better, and best in order to be blameless when we stand before Jesus.
Change begins in you!
