I’m kind of a gameshow junkie, and one of my favorites over the years has been “Family Feud.” That show is a lot of fun! Each round begins with a face-off where a person from each family walks up to the table with buzzers. The host reads the question, and the first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer the question.
Have you ever seen someone hit the buzzer before the host finishes the question and give a completely wrong answer? Just imagine, “Name a person you’d love…” [buzzer] “My wife!” [X sound] “Eww, sorry. That’s not on the board. I’ll finish the question now. Name a person you’d love to see fall off a cliff.” Oh man! And that dude had said his wife. Yeah, what an embarrassing moment. No doubt his early answer would land him in the dog house when he got home.
Listen, it’s really important to hear the question BEFORE you give your answer. That’s not just good advice. That’s godly wisdom. God says in Proverbs 18:13, “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” That’s absolutely true. You can make yourself look real foolish and end up giving a terrible answer.
That’s why elsewhere the Bible tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. The wise person takes time to listen before he ever speaks. I bet that’s why God gave us two ears but only one mouth. May you lean into that truth and take full advantage of God’s design!
Change begins in you!
