When it comes to advertising and marketing, there are several businesses that are really good at what they do, but perhaps there are none better than alcoholic beverage companies. Think about some of the most memorable commercials of all time, and at or near the top of that list will likely be a company selling alcohol of some sort. From a marketing perspective, they do a fantastic job painting a picture of how their product could make your life better. Of course, they show all of the upside and none of the downside.
When it comes to alcohol, we need a double shot of reality, and that’s exactly what we get when we turn to the Bible. Proverbs 20:1, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” When a person drinks alcohol, they come under the influence of that alcohol, and it changes their mood. Oftentimes, as this proverb mentions, they get mouthy and are easily angered. They are much more likely to fight verbally and physically. But, that’s just one of the ways alcohol can be hurtful. If a person is not careful, alcohol can lead them astray into sin and foolishness of all kinds and even death.
Beloved, I can’t show you chapter and verse in the Bible that says to never drink alcohol, but I can show you that drunkenness from too much alcohol is always sinful. And, I can show lots of passages that say we must be very cautious and wise concerning alcohol. So, many lives have been captured and destroyed by a drink. So many regrets have come after being under its influence.
So, beloved, don’t be foolish with alcohol. Misusing it leads to nothing good, and it’s so easy to misuse. In fact, the wisest position very well may be to never drink a drop because he who never drinks a drop will never be led astray by it.
Change begins in you!
