The scribes in Jesus’s day had the robes, the greetings, the front-row seats. They could quote Scripture and lead prayers. From the outside, they looked like the most devoted men in the room.
Jesus wasn’t impressed.
He watched them devour widows’ houses while offering long prayers as cover. Religion had become a costume for them, worn for applause, not worship.
Then He asked a question they couldn’t answer: If the Messiah is David’s son, why does David call Him Lord? They couldn’t answer. Their theology was too small. They knew about God but didn’t truly know Him.
You know, that gap is still dangerous today. It’s possible to attend every service, say every word, and fill every role… while your heart is somewhere else entirely. Beloved, outward religion without inward devotion isn’t just empty. Jesus says it earns greater condemnation.
So, what’s the cure? Try harder? No, that’s just outward conformity. The answer is stop, run to Jesus, and give Him your heart!
Change begins in you!
