Down South, when you meet somebody new, there’s one question that comes after they find out your name: “Who’s your mama? Who’s your daddy?” Bloodline matters. Heritage matters. Everybody wants to know where you come from before they decide what to make of you.
Well, Apostle Paul asks the same question in Galatians 4, but the stakes are eternal. Two mamas. Two sons. Two ways to live.
One mama, Hagar, was a slave. Her son, Ishmael, was born the natural way. It was Abraham’s effort, Abraham’s plan, and Abraham’s attempt to help God out. That son represents every religion that says, “You must earn it.”
Sarah, on the other hand, the other mama, was free. And her son Isaac was born the miraculous way through a dead womb, a promise kept, and nothing but the power of God. That son represents the grace of God found in Jesus Christ.
So, here’s the question Apostle Paul is asking you: Who is your mama? Which mother are you living under?
Are you striving, earning, performing, hoping you will finally be enough? That’s Hagar’s house.
Or are you resting in a promise you didn’t deserve and couldn’t manufacture? That’s Sarah’s house.
Two mamas. Two ways to live. Only one leads life. Choose Sarah!
Change begins in you!
