Wednesday Is for Worship: “We Believe”

Songs are powerful.  As we often hear, music soothes the savage beast.  They have the ability to affect us deeply on so many levels.  They can capture and remind us of an intense moment in our life, bringing either joy or sorrow to the foreground of our hearts and faces.  They can incite one to nearly every emotion imaginable.  They are powerful indeed!

But on this Wednesday, we must be reminded that songs are also a powerful teaching tool.  That’s one of the strongest reasons why Christianity is a singing religion.  Through verse and melody, the faith is transmitted into the hearts and minds of Jesus followers.  That’s why it’s so important for the Christian songs we sing to be biblically correct, but that’s another post I suppose.

A great example of how Christian songs teach is the Newboys recent release “We Believe.”  This song, written by Richie Fike, Matt Hooper, and Travis Ryan, was the final track on the Newsboys 2013 album “Restart.”  This was the 17th overall studio album for the band, but the 4th with Michael Tait (formerly of DC Talk) on the vocals.

The verses point to the importance of hanging on to truth in the midst life’s struggles, and then the chorus lays out what those basic, rock-solid truths of Christianity are.  This song is simply a Christian creed set to music.  May we believe it all!

As a personal testimony to the power of music, this song has played a very important role in my life.  To be more specific, I should say my son’s life.  It was this song that sparked the conversation on the night that my oldest son gave his life to Jesus Christ.  My wife was listening to Christian radio in the van with our children when this song came on.  They rocked out to it, and when it was over, my wife took an opportunity to once again share the gospel with our oldest son who had been very close to salvation many times but was struggling with the truth of the resurrection of Jesus.  They talked over the truths sang about in the song, and she especially emphasized the resurrection.  About five hours later back at our house, he called me into his room and said that he had finally trusted Christ as his savior.  He finally believed it all!

Do you believe it all?  I pray you do.  If not, may this song have the powerful impact that it had on my son.  And if so, may it build you up in the faith ever further.  It’s Wednesday.  Let’s worship!

In this time of desperation
When all we know is doubt and fear
There is only one foundation
We believe, we believe
In this broken generation
When all is dark, You help us see
There is only one salvation
We believe, we believeWe believe in God the Father
We believe in Jesus Christ
We believe in the Holy Spirit
And He’s given us new life
We believe in the crucifixion
We believe that He conquered death
We believe in the resurrection
And He’s comin’ back again, we believeSo, let our faith be more than anthems
Greater than the songs we sing
And in our weakness and temptations
We believe, we believe!

Let the lost be found and the dead be raised!
In the here and now, let love invade!
Let the church live love, our God will save
We believe, we believe!
And the gates of hell will not prevail!
For the power of God, has torn the veil!
Now we know Your love will never fail!
We believe, we believe!
